Holland is not quite the same as The
Netherlands. The name Holland
represents only two regions of The
Netherlands named North-Holland and
South-Holland. The country is divided
into 12 different regions.

Holland is a constitutional monarchy.
King Willem-Alexander presides over
the government in name only. The
Royal Palace
in Amsterdam is only used for royal
receptions.

Most of the population speaks English
as a second language.

In smaller towns and around the
countryside pedestrian and cycle tracks
are all over. Standard Dutch bikes are
easy to rent.

The famous Dutch windmills have
been used to pump away water for
hundreds of years.

Herring with chopped raw onions and
pickles are loved by the Dutch 12 million
kgs are consumed every year.
The Netherlands may be a small country,
but it is famous for its windmills, cheese,
clogs, colourful tulips and the main capital
Amsterdam. The country has a population of
about 16.6 million people. The western part of
the country is the most densely populated
area and most visited by tourists. The
Netherlands is an urbanised country and has
good public transport. The towns are not far
apart and distances being relatively short
make it easy to travel around the country. Did
you know the Netherlands has the highest
usage of bicycles in the World? However, a
bike gets stolen every minute of every day
around the country.

Most of the country lies below sea level with
the lowest point at 7 metres below sea level.
Which means, in the case of a huge nature
disaster two-thirds of the country could be
flooded by water. This is why The Netherlands
became the world’s experts is dike building
and water management. A great example of
this is the "Delta Works" in the southern
region Zeeland or great dike the "Afsluitdijk" in
the northern part of the country.
If you plan to spend a couple of days in
Holland, many tourists choose to visit the
famous capital Amsterdam with its beautiful
canals and famous museums like Van Gogh
or Rembrandt museum. But Amsterdam does
not represent Holland at all and the country
has lots to offer such as many picturesque
Dutch towns like the historical town Haarlem,
the traditional fishing village Volendam or
Maastricht with its Burgundian atmosphere.
Also the countryside is full of history, the
coastline has kilometres of wide sandy
beaches and dune nature reserves. Giethoorn
is known to be the Dutch Venice, and the
remote Dutch Islands offer beautiful nature
reserves and beaches, a beloved holiday
destination by the Dutch.
We would advise a stay of a few days in one or
two towns and consider the great advantages of
day excursions around the country. For
example, when staying in Amsterdam, you can
easily reach a lot of places you probably would
want to visit within 1 -2 hour by public transport.
Amsterdam is best explored by foot and on
bicycle at a leisurely pace.
