Amalfi Coast & Ruins of Pompeii
This private independent day trip will take you through the Italian countryside to the UNESCO heritage site of the ancient city of Pompeii at the foot of the
Volcanic Mountain Vesuvius. During the approx. 3-hours drive you will stop to see the Abbey of Montecassino, a hilltop monastery.
Then drive on to the ancient city of Pompeii at the foot of the Volcanic Mountain Vesuvius. Pompeii, along with the cities of Herculaneum and in the
surrounding area, was mostly destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 ms (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ashes and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.It
was ruled by the Roman Empire in 80 BC. 160 years later by the time of destruction its population was estimated at 11,000 people, the city had a complex
water system, an amphitheatre, gymnasium and a port. Fossils and artefacts left in the ashes provide an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city
during the Roman times. You have about two hours to discover the site independently. Optional you can choose for a guided tour of Pompeii and hear about
day-to-day life of the Pompeii locals as you wander the streets where ancient shops, cafes and even brothels once could be found.
Then you will continue your trip along the winding Amalfi Coast to your final stop, Positano. Here, you have more free time to admire the pastel-coloured
houses on the cliffs, shop in high-end boutiques, enjoy a drink or meal at a local restaurant or take a walk on the beach. At the end of the afternoon you will
be transferred back to your hotel in Rome. When your time is up, hop back in your mini coach for the return drive to Rome for hotel drop-off. Please note: If
you prefer, the visit to Positano can be replaced with a visit to Sorrento.
